The Smelly Cooter: An English Pub

In America, we tend to name our bars in a pretty blatant fashion: "O'Rourke's Bar," "Seamus' Drinking Habit," or "The Un-inibitor." In other countries, particularly England, but also commonly in Scotland or Ireland, bars are called "pubs" and pubs are not named so blatantly.

"The Whistle and the Feminist," "The Bearded Clam," or "The Pirate's Wooden Leg," are all the sort of names you would find hanging outside the doors to Britain's most amazing pubs. So who's system is better?

Right now, I'd have to say that the British method wins, if only because they've got a thousand years of drinking tradition on us upstart Americans. Now, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the American system, however, the American system is a good one - crappy techno music, dimmed lights, and potent substances. We've even exported our regret-making system to other parts of the world. Who, though, can beat the wonders of and old style pub, where you can order greasy foods with scary Cockney names with your intoxicating beverage? Who can beat a place where the music is provided by a piano and a bunch of drunken old men? No amount of techno music can beat that. No sir.

And to think, I will be there, taking part in it all in 26 days. Huzzah.
