Rapper's Delight

Ok, so I am listening to Rapper's Delight by (possibly the only) Classic Rap cover band, the Old School Players, because the Sugar Hill Gang (original) version wasn't available on iTunes, and I needed some rap music from before the "kill whitey" era. You know, back when rap was cheesy, Will Smith rapped about his parents, and everyone else wore parachute pants and giant wall-clocks around their necks. Modern bling pales in comparison.

Those were the good old days. When DJ Jazzy Jeff was still a musician and not a washed-up child star. When Urkel ruled the airwaves (you don't see much of my boy Urkel anymore, huh... typecasting is a bitch. -- Jaleel White, if you are out there, I've got a role for you in my uber-low-budget student film... but I'll need a signed picture of you with your pants hiked up to your neck for it). Yes, that was a simpler time. Then rappers started to remind white people that they weren't too happy with us, this made white people sad.

Of course, the use of so many ethnic slurs, and talk of cap-popping, cop killing, and of course, killing whitey, only lead to the ultimate success of the genre. Ironically, as with all things that become successful, some dory-assed white-boy who couldn't make any friends in elementary school got into it -- and so was born Eminem.

And that concludes our history lesson.
