Like many men, I'm a sports fan. In today's society, sports are acceptable viewing for males while "So You Think You Can Dance?" is definitely not. The problem is, I don't really know why I like to watch sports.

So, I'll explore the issue further.

Nowadays sports are ingrained in our culture, we watch sports because our fathers watched sports, and their fathers before them and so on. Our motivation to watch and enjoy watching sports comes from the tradition of watching sports. What was our great-great grandfather's motivation though? Professional sports as a spectator event started in the 1800s -- travelling boxing and wrestling (before chairs and other forms of bludgeoning replaced holds and all the other gay stuff) got it started, and soon traveling teams of baseball players would "barnstorm" across the country.

I understand wanting to watch boxing. Its like laughing at retards... You take two people who aren't you, and encourage them to injure each other for your enjoyment. What's not to love, right? Team sports, however, present a different motivation.

Let me take this moment to point something out: You're watching someone else play a game. Imagine being one of the men watching the early baseball games in the 1840's. What would be going through your head? "Wow, they really look like they're having fun... that's nice." You watch someone else have a really good time, probably because you're too lazy to go out and have a good time yourself.

Its lazy-American syndrome. The athletes play the game, and we eat nachos and live vicariously through them. That, or we bet on them, because some sports (cough...golf...cough) just can't help but to suck unless you had your money on Tiger Woods to win.
